D: Alright, welcome back everybody. Kelvin and I are excited to be on here today. We have what we think is an exciting topic, something that has been truly life-changing for us. I want you to think about this:
Do you have an area of life where you've been trying to see results? Maybe it's been for a while—years, even decades—that you've been trying to see results and reach a new level. Maybe things are going well, but you know there's another level, and you just can't quite seem to break through that next level. It's like this invisible ceiling you've probably experienced before.
What's causing that? How do you break through that? That's what we'll be diving into today.
The foundation of all this, I think, comes from a verse in Proverbs that says, "As water reflects the face, so your life reflects your heart." And everything you do, the Bible tells us, everything you do flows from the heart. All the results we're producing in our life—all the physical things we're seeing—are flowing from the inside. The problem is, a lot of times we try to fix the external things: the nutrition, the finances, the health, the workouts, or the relationships. We try to fix the external things, but those are just the fruit. Jesus says, "If you want to have good fruit, you have to have a good tree." We have to get to the root of it. And I think the root of it goes into the programming that we have on the inside, the programming that we have in our heart.
You are a new creation in Christ. God gave you a new heart, and He wants to help you install some new programming on the inside of you. Kelvin and I are going to be talking about that today. But Kelvin, as this is one of our favorite topics, what am I missing as we get started?
K: Well, I think you're missing nothing! When you were talking about the roots, growing up in Kansas with a lot of farmers, I learned about fertile ground. If you're trying to grow your roots on rock—and while we want to stand on the Rock of truth—you need your roots to go into fertile ground so they can grow deep and withstand nature. That's kind of where we are. As we stand on that rock, Jesus, we have to find our fertile ground in Him so that we can go deep. We can let the roots do their natural thing as we feed them the Word and scripture. That's the vision I have when I hear you talk about that.
D: I'm glad you brought that up. So, just a quick plug here: we have a program called The New You. The New You really helps tackle this process. It will help you get this new vision, this New You, installed in your heart so that it changes your results in life. For me, it's hard to put into words exactly what this program has done. I can just tell it's making differences, and it's happening from the inside out. But you reminded me of something: years ago, I started recording daily Communion meditations. And one of the things God showed me when I started those was that the very first messages were all about getting established in your covenant with God. You're talking about fertile ground. God has rolled away our old heart—we used to have hearts of stone—and He's given us a new heart that is good ground; it's fertile soil. But then we have to take this new creation in Christ, this new covenant we have, and get it established. We not only have to know what's been promised, but we have to strengthen it, firm it up, and get it established in our heart. A brand-new plant, if it's not established, will be killed by a little drought, a little storm, or some wind. So, we have to get this New You established in your heart, and I think that comes through repetition.
K: You know, I think we underestimate how our imagination plays out. Does it play out in the truth? Does it play out with the Word that's in our heart? It seems like we have to take captive—we have to lasso this thing so it tells the truth. If I wake up in the morning saying, "This is the day the Lord has made; I'm going to rejoice and be glad in it," but then I walk out of my bedroom and suddenly I'm starting to feel distracted, I could be playing out my day in my imagination in a way that is nothing like I wanted it to go. So, how do I take that and put it in place on the inside so that as I start to walk my day out, it produces the fruit from the scriptures I read?
D: The imagination is such a powerful gift that God has given us because we can use that imagination to stir in the images that we want on purpose. We can start to build this new image. There's a connection between the heart and the imagination. The more you build the New You on the inside and the more you stir that into your imagination, it begins to embed that New You into your heart. That's where we want to get: getting that New You, that new creation in Christ, established in your heart.
D: One of the hardest parts is letting go of the old. Just letting it go.
K: Yes, it is difficult because if you've been doing something a certain way for a long time, and you're trying to create a new path because God is leading you that way, it's hard to figure out how entangled you are in all of those things. It really does start with what you know to do today. You start taking those steps, and it's like eating an elephant—you do it one bite at a time. You do it daily, and you start to gain that momentum until you see that root getting in there, and it's hard to shake it.
D: You bring up the analogy of momentum. If that momentum is going in the wrong direction, you've got some current that's wanting to carry you back. It takes some work at first just to get it back to neutral.
K: I like the way you described that. Another way I look at it is our momentum is similar to a train. How many cars do we have on that one area of life, and how heavy is that one area of life that we're trying to change? If you're on that train, and you want to change directions, you can slam on the brakes, but you're just going to keep going. And depending on how big or how small, it could be a short period, or you could be clear out here. I think where people get frustrated is once you get stopped, that's not it. You actually have to come clear back a lot of times to where you slammed on the brakes, and then you start moving forward. And sometimes we have to be patient during that time to allow the work to happen as you're trying to get there.
D: The other side of this is the revelation that the self-image and the images I have on the inside act like a thermostat, controlling my actions. I've got my programming set to a certain temperature. When I start trying to break above it, unconsciously, I self-sabotage and come right back to where I've always been. In order to break through that, the answer is not trying harder; we have to go back and do some reprogramming on the inside. I had some areas in my own life—in fitness—where I wanted to see more progress, but every time I broke above it, I got pulled back. As soon as I started working on playing out a different scenario in my imagination—doing some reprogramming on the inside—all of a sudden, I started making progress. People underestimate this. They think change has to take a long time, but as soon as you change the programming on the inside, stuff starts happening.
D: Kelvin had the idea to write a book for eight years, couldn't bring it to fruition, and then, within the first week of us implementing this New You program, he was messaging me saying, "Look at this, I'm writing! I'm doing this thing."
K: I am beyond excited. That was very early on in our 40 days that I started. I've had eight years of turmoil, but to be able to put the pieces together now, it's effortless. I put the effort in, and the results show up. It's like I've cleared the barriers, and I've had a tremendous amount of peace.
D: Think about the four-minute mile. Nobody had done it, but as soon as one person broke through that boundary, everybody else did. The change is about building that image and that belief on the inside. The New You program is about building that image, connecting it with Scripture, and playing it out in the truth. It's going to be unique to you. God hates bricks because they are all the same, made by conforming to a mold. You are like a living stone, unique and made by God. Kelvin's New You looks different than mine, and that's good.
K: In Philippians 4, it talks about rejoicing in the Lord always and being reasonable. It says, "The Lord is at hand. Do not be anxious." Then it talks about prayer and supplication, and then thanksgiving. I think those are key fundamental things in conforming your imagination. It says, "Let your requests be made known to God, and the peace which surpasses your understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." That's the end game.
D: We often struggle to do what we know to do. We know we need to be doing it, but we can't execute it consistently. Why? Because of programming. The New You program has God's grace and ability upon you to give you the power to do what you couldn't do. You can start seeing results for 10 or 15 minutes a day. The more you put into it, the more you're going to get out of it, but it actually only takes a few minutes a day.
K: You've broken it down into very manageable pieces, and you're able to start stepping out of the old way and into the new way.
D: I can't tell you the number of people who said, "Oh, I'm going to get in shape first and then I'll come see you." I'm always thinking, "If you get in shape first, why do you need to come see me? Just start now." If you're planning on doing it, let's just get started because the next 40 days are going to go by either way. You might as well have some progress made. The hardest thing is getting to the place where you make a decision and put off procrastination and take action.
K: Make today a masterpiece.
D: Make today a masterpiece. If you have some area where you've been struggling or know there's a higher level, this will help. You just have to make the decision and go for it.
K: Absolutely.
D: Well, Kelvin, I appreciate it as always. I look forward to hearing people's testimonies of the New You and what it's doing in their life.
K: Very much so. We're excited.
